His work expressed the lives of African American in their everyday lives. He used his platform to convey the happiness and struggles found within the African American community.

Zora Neale HurstonZora Neale Hurston played a tremendous part in the Harlem Renaissance. She was a novelist, and she had a wide variety of interest towards others subjects as well. She spent a lot of her time researching folklore. She was interested with different types of songs ,and dances. She tried to emphasize her heritage throughout her work as it was beginning to be less common for African Americans to do. While she was in the Caribbean she wrote one of her most popular novels titled, Their Eyes Were Watching God.

Claude Mckay was a poet, as well as a novelist. Many of his poems were featured in various magazines. One of his most popular poems was titled, If We Must Die. This poem helped to stress the importance or racial equality and even threatened retaliation. He was constantly traveling and writing novels. While he was in North Africa he wrote one of his most popular novels titled, Home to Harlem. Even though he didn't become an American citizen until after the 1920's he still greatly influenced the Harlem Renaissance.
